New to the AD/Biogas industry, Ross Mingotti could have been forgiven for walking away from a plant that had already had major mixing issues in its final storage tank.

Within two months of him joining the business in December 2021, one of the paddle mixers in the secondary tank failed.

CHALLENGE

When Ross Mingotti joined AMPGREEN’s Greengill Farm AD Plant, he encountered significant issues in the final storage tank, which held nearly 3 million gallons of digestate. A paddle mixer failure in the secondary tank only months into his role underscored the challenge. With delays in getting replacement parts due to supply chain issues from the Ukraine invasion, the plant struggled to manage its 2.4MwH power supply efficiently. The tank had been offline for over a year, and makeshift solutions proved unreliable. The design further complicated maintenance, as accessing mixers required a complete tank emptying, causing 20-40 days of downtime, significant power losses, and increasing costs.

SOLUTION

Seeking a robust and low-maintenance mixing system, Ross and Plant Manager Jamie Seggie chose Landia. Landia proposed four 22kW submersible mixers for the inner digester and six mixers of varying power for the final storage tank. The mixers were set at different heights, speeds, and patterns to ensure thorough mixing with low energy consumption. Landia’s local support, flexible service options, and commitment to adapting to Greengill’s needs were pivotal. Unlike other vendors, Landia didn’t push for unnecessary add-ons, working closely with the team to understand their specific requirements.

RESULTS

With Landia’s system in place, the Greengill AD Plant now experiences consistent, energy-efficient mixing. Power consumption is minimized, and local support ensures the mixers operate reliably with preventive maintenance every six months. Greengill Farm sends an impressive 85% of its generated power to the grid, with only 15% used on-site. The Landia team’s willingness to adapt and support the plant through the installation and beyond has provided Ross and Jamie with both reliable equipment and peace of mind, allowing them to focus on productivity and consistent quality in their AD operations.
