Slurry transfer system greatly enhanced with Landia pumps at Metcalfe Farms

Written by Chris French

At Metcalfe Farms in Yorkshire, efficient slurry handling is essential for both dairy operations and biogas production. However, frequent pump blockages and maintenance issues were causing costly downtime. By integrating Landia’s Chopper Pumps and an optimized slurry transfer system, the farm has significantly improved efficiency, reduced maintenance, and enhanced sustainability—ensuring a smoother operation for years to come.

CHALLENGE

Metcalfe Farms in Yorkshire faced multiple challenges with slurry management. Their existing pumps frequently blocked, requiring time-consuming and costly maintenance.

The system also needed to support the farm’s 200kWh biogas plant, making efficient slurry transfer crucial.

Additionally, their dairy’s wastewater pumps burned out frequently, leading to constant replacements and inefficiencies.

SOLUTION

To tackle these issues, Metcalfe Farms partnered with Landia, installing:

  • A Chopper Pump to replace the old, frequently blocked pump.
  • A new 5.5kW Landia pump to handle dairy wastewater and slurry debris more efficiently.
  • An integrated guide rail and pipework system for easy maintenance.
  • Automation & sensors to optimize slurry management.

RESULTS

  • Reduced downtime: The new pumps handle slurry and debris without frequent blockages.
  • Lower maintenance: A single operator can now clear occasional blockages in minutes.
  • Improved efficiency: The biogas plant receives a steady slurry supply, improving energy production.
  • Cost savings: No more replacing pumps every six months due to burnout.
  • Sustainable operations: Less reliance on diesel-powered machinery and reduced environmental impact.
