Hendwr Farm in North Wales has successfully integrated biogas production into its operations, utilizing a mix of manure, chicken litter, and crop waste. A key component of their system is Landia’s Chopper Pump and mixer, ensuring efficient homogenization and reliable performance. This case study highlights how Landia’s durable and corrosion-resistant solutions have helped the farm maintain high uptime, improve biogas output, and optimize digestate management for sustainable agriculture.

CHALLENGE

Hendwr Farm needed a reliable mixing and pumping solution to process a diverse feedstock for its biogas plant.

The system had to:

  • Efficiently homogenize a mix of manure, chicken litter, corn, and chaff.
  • Handle highly corrosive conditions (low pH of 3.8).
  • Maintain high uptime (minimum 95%) to ensure profitability.
  • Support dewatering efforts for better digestate management.

SOLUTION

Chopper Pump & Mixer for Homogenization:

  • Installed in the 90m³ reception tank, ensuring a consistent mix before digestion.
  • The Landia Chopper Pump reduces particle size, improving digestion efficiency and biogas yield.

Corrosion-Resistant Upgrade:

  • After six years, the cast-iron pump succumbed to corrosion. Landia provided a temporary replacement to prevent downtime.
  • Upgraded to a stainless-steel pump designed for extreme conditions.

Reliable Performance & Support:

  • Landia’s proactive maintenance keeps the system running at peak efficiency.
  • Personalized service ensures quick solutions and minimal disruptions.

RESULTS

  • Improved Biogas Production: Homogeneous feedstock leads to a more stable digestion process.
  • Higher Uptime: Reliable equipment ensures consistent performance, keeping the plant at its 95% efficiency target.
  • Long-Term Cost Savings: The stainless-steel upgrade extends pump lifespan and reduces replacement costs.
  • Better Digestate Handling: Effective mixing and dewatering improve fertilizer distribution and nutrient retention.
